Overview

In 1970, a rhino poaching epidemic began that hit black rhino populations severely. The crisis continued to deplete populations right through to the early 1990s, so much so that by 1993, there were only 2,475 black rhinos left in the world. The Save The Rhinos Foundation supports and manages rhino conservation projects in Africa and Asia to ensure the survival of rhinos through strategic partnerships, targeted protection, and scientifically sound interventions.

Design process

Problem statement

Nonprofit organizations are facing challenges in keeping their donors engaged, shoring up critical support, and looking for ways to make the most of disruptions. Although having a dedicated website is useful, it is not accessible enough for other users on different platform.

CHALLENGES & PAIN POINTS

👤 A lack of engagement from users

Poor user engagement is a major sign the website can be improved in areas including navigation, content, and more.

✅ Poor conversions on 'Donation page'

When 'Donation page' aren’t performing at top quality, additional support from donors is also absent.

🖥️ Platforms

Most nonprofit websites are still not available for multiple platforms, which leads to lack of user engagement.

🔊 Lack of accessibility features

Accessibility is usually ignored and excluded from nonprofit websites, which makes most of nonprofit websites not inclusive.

Qualitative research methods proved to be the most effective during the design process, most notably our user interviews and usability testing sessions. Whenever we encounter an issue that we are trying to solve, it's smart to build a good foundation. In this case, I did this by asking some generic but useful internal questions.

How might we make education of endangered rhino species more accessible to users?

How might we increase overall users' contributions?

interview questions

What do you know about endangered rhino species?
Do you make any contribution to help save any endangered species? How do you make your contribution?
What are the challenges you face when trying to make a contribution? Do you have any preferred method?

INSIGHTS

50% of users are not aware of endangered rhino species and do not know how to make contributions

50% of users feel less motivated to make contributions due to lack of accessibility to to nonprofit organizations

100% of users feel that they would make more contributions if they had quick and easy access to make donations

Goals

Give users accessible education of endangered rhinos

To help better educate users with concise information of threats that rhino species are facing

Improve user engagement in multiple platforms

By making Save The Rhinos available in different platforms, and building its own dedicated app.

Increase conversion rate on the 'Contribution' page

More contribution options for users to choose from: donation, adoption, and volunteer.

THE USERS OF SAVE THE RHINOS

Save The Rhinos users range from dedicated wildlife volunteers, animal lovers, young adults, and casual browsers.

The animal lovers

A desk worker who occasionally participates in outdoor activities with his family and dogs. They love to go on a picnic in a national parks on weekends. Their passion of saving endangered animals grew deeper since they saw a post of a poached rhino online.

I really want to make contributions for endangered rhinos. I have a corgi myself, and I want to do learn more about wild animals and do my best to save them. Especially the endangered ones.

The wildlife volunteers

A mother and a wildlife rescue volunteer at a conservation park. They have been studying endangered rhino species and trying their best to keep the rhino population from decreasing. As a busy mother, they wish that there is a better and on-the-go way to promote rhino conservation and encourage others to join the campaigns.

Wildlife conservation is really important to me. I love my family and I love my job. But saving these endangered species is something that I deeply care about.

USER FLOW

User flow helps visualize the path taken by a user to make a contribution.

In this project, the main user flow highlighted is making a contribution, where user can choose from three options: making a donation, adopting a rhino, and volunteering.

SITEMAP

Progressive enhancement approach from the smallest device is applied.

The enhancement from the smallest device is used to keep focus on the most important elements.

Building a sitemap

To cater to the users' needs, I built a sitemap that lists out all the pages that is going to be indexed. Laying out all of these pages helped better organized the website's structure and provide more concise Information Architecture (IA).

WIREFRAMES

The visual language combines functionality with imagery and microelements to educate and encourage users to save endangered rhino species.

The personality of Save The Rhinos as a brand was crafted to be approachable, friendly, inspiring, and encouraging.

AN ENCOURAGING, INSPIRING, & FRIENDLY TONE OF VOICE

"Make a bigger impact by giving monthly."

"Together we do what it takes to ensure that rhinos will survive and thrive in the wild."

"A world where wild rhinos thrive."

"Thank you for making a difference through your compassion and generosity."

DESIGN SYSTEM

Building up from small elements to templates and pages, start by mapping out the foundational elements, or atoms, that will be used in the design.

TAKEAWAYS

Being an animal lover myself, working on Save The Rhinos was incredibly rewarding. Putting my idea out there is my small contribution to raise awareness of endangered rhinos.

Conceptually, Save The Rhinos is something that I feel society, especially the wildlife conservation society, would greatly benefit from. The current options and tools out there to perform the same task with the same expectations just don't cut it. This was my first time using the progressive enhancement approach, and I can definitely see it being useful in future projects. In my opinion, although there might be a better solution out there, Save The Rhinos is definitely an experience that works well to encourage animal lovers and volunteer workers to do more to ensure wild rhinos would still be able to roam freely in the future.
