The painting studio is specially designed for a painter located in Ubud, Bali. Paddy fields or subak in Balinese, was chosen to be the location of the design because of the character of the painter, who is a landscape painter. Subak Eco Painting Studio which is situated in the middle of a paddy field has concept that integrates and empathizes with the surrounding environment by maintaining and preserving the paddy field's ecosystem underneath and has an independent building system to minimize the use of energy from the surrounding environment. In general, Subak Eco Painting Studio is trying to apply the principles of ecological architecture to create an ecological painting studio.
An ecosystem is an ecological system formed by an inseparable reciprocal linkage between a living being and its environment. A food chain is a key requirement of an ecosystem cycle. In addition, the survival of the wetland ecosystem is also influenced and maintained by farmers' activities. Heckman (1979) suggested that as long as the land was farmed, it would maintain its equilibrium from year to year. Therefore this painting studio will also be a place for its visitors to interact with nature and the farmers.
Water treatment pond is built in the shaded areas to avoid building waste that flows into the fields. The water coming into the treatment pond is grey water from the bathroom, toilet, and kitchen. The treatment process is through several compartments. In the first compartment, the water will be filtered with fine sand, then flowed into the second compartment which is planted with eceng gondok or water hyacinth. Lastly, the last compartment is a fish pond, where the fish will eat the remains of impurities in the water. After treated, the water is flowed into the paddy fields.
