What is music?

In the exploration stage of this project, we tried to define what music really is. What is music? Defining music is not quite possible as music is an abstract concept. However, tracing it back to its roots and how it has been affecting our culture seem to be the best option. Music has had an impact on society in general. It has changed everything, and it has also had a huge impact on our cultural evolution too. With time, more and more musical instruments have been developed and people started to play them with one another. This resulted in even more sophisticated and even complex sounds being made. The rhythms, the tempo, the beat and more all changed along with the culture. Musical instruments are also evolving. We can see how in the early times, people needed physical instruments to play music. Today, playing music is just as easy as a touch of a button in our phones as everything is stored in the clouds and is always mobile.

The connection

Located in an international city of Taiwan, this project functions as a music house as well as a transit spot for both locals and tourists. From and urban scale, it invites both creative people from all backgrounds and passersby to get together, connect, and express their ideas and love in music and art. Despite its building height restrictions, the rooftop area serves as an extension of the nearby parks. The strong axis drawn from the outside to the site, which doubles are circulation paths, also creates a strong relationship between its surrounding and the building.

The music center

This music center encompasses progression, creativity, and diversity in the music industry. The program includes a massive amphitheater as an anchor, several theaters and livehouses, and a museum. Moreover, the open landscape area supports a lively environment for outdoor activities and concerts. Other than its diverse program, this project also considers the comfort of its occupants. When big events take place, the music center will produce a considerable loud noise which could disturb its neighboring development. Therefore, the building mass was purposely recessed to create a practical acoustic buffer.
